Hello to all! BruSton is glad to announce that insyaAllah, friendly matches will be held between BruSton and Cardiff (BDSSW) soon! Details are as follow:

Matches included : Futsal, Netball and Badminton

Hari Raya Aidil Adha

Alhamdulillah,

Today Allah has bless us with another beautiful night "to celebrate the victory of so many pilgrims" said Wardah Ja'afar.

The celebration was held in a house at Mayfield Road commencing from 7:30pm onwards. Fireworks were showering all over the area in Southampton, and so another Bruston member Aqilah Ali also states "It really feels like raya."

Our takbir Hari Raya was recited after some of us had our sembahyang Fardhu Isya' together. Soon after, we continued our celebration with a feast made by everyone.

On behalf of Bruston, I would like to send the biggest thanks to those who have work so hard with love in preparing the food, the place and the company. Alhamdulillah, the night went well, the food was great and everyone was happy.

As a general knowledge that I would love to share:

We can't fast from the 10th of Zulhijjah till the 13th of Zulhijjah.
Sunat Hari Raya: Take a shower in the morning, cut of your nails, wear wonderful and appropriate clothes, use perfume or something that can make you smell nice and lastly go the mosque/surau.

BruQuest!

Bruquest is BruSton's very own amazing race. Yes, the kind of race where you run around a city following a map, meeting people at certain checkpoints and doing reasonably difficult tasks to get points.

On the 22nd of October, fellow Brustoners and friends participated in this fun-filled activity. We had seven groups of four or three consisting of juniors, seniors and pilot trainees. Before the race, our President, Zainah Azharan gave a briefing at the university concourse outlining the rules of the game and how to win it.

The race started at the Southampton University interchange where all participants are given envelopes containing a map of checkpoints which are spread out all over the city. There are committee members waiting to give out the tasks at every checkpoint. Each task must be completed to receive a point marked by a star sticker on the corresponding location in their maps. The team with the most star stickers and the quickest to arrive at the last checkpoint wins the race.

BRUSTON HARI RAYA

At the beginning of the new academic term, Bruston decided to hold door to door open house visits (just like how we celebrate Raya in Brunei!) around the residential area near campus.

The first open house started in Harrison Road where everyone met up for breakfast and then moved on to the next house in Mayfield together. Everyone, all exuberant and dressed up in colourful Cara Melayu clothes, was ready to go on the series of open houses with large appetites.

From the houses in Mayfield to the one in Broadlands and then in Sirdar and finally Blenheim Gardens, we Brustoners enjoyed having guests, eating good home cooked food, meeting newcomers and chit-chatting with the old friends in lovely grassy back yards. The Bruston raya was all about building new relationships and maintaining existing ones. May we always stay together and remember each other for many years more.

MS Brunei UK Societies Fair

Today BruSton 2011/12 committee had a booth in the Maktab Sains UK Societies Fair together with 22 other Bruneian Societies in the UK to promote their universities and societies to potential new students who might be applying higher education in the UK.

It was a great opportunity to recruit more members and we managed to grab a large crowd of students! All in all it was amazing despite the irony of having a lot of non-working fans on the floor at the forever hot canteen area! :P

Thanks to all who visited and came to support the event at the fair! And not forgetting the societies who took their time to come to MS and have their own booth! :)

Today BruSton held a sungkai gathering at Coffee Zone Kiulap, Brunei. And, it was a great turnout! :D

Approximately 40 new and current students came to the Sungkai gathering to catch up and had a pre-icebreaking session whilst breaking our fast during the blessed month of Ramadhan.

It was great to see a lot of familiar and new faces and thanks to those who came and meet us! :)

HRD Briefing at Empire Hotel and Country Club

Today there was a briefing organised by the HRD Services at the Empire Hotel and Country Club, Brunei. Several UK universities International Office representatives came to give their respective briefings to the new students, one of which was the University of Southampton. The current and former committee members of BruSton also came to give some support and show some familiar faces to the new students.

Karen Arnold, the International Officer for University of Southampton gave a talk about the general life as a student at the University. One of the BruSton committee members also gave a small talk about BruSton and Southampton in general.

Many thanks to Karen for the handing out of certificates to the former members of the BruSton committee! And many thanks to those who came to the briefing! May your year in Southampton be an amazing one! :)

Maktab Duli Brunei-UK Societies Fair

Today Maktab Duli in collaboration with the BruSheff Society have organised a small fair for Brunei-UK Student Societies at the new Maktab Duli building in Gadong. BruSton attended the Fair where we were able to promote our society and most importantly the University and the city itself by talking to potential new students for the next academic year. It was a great turnout overall from the prospective students and thanks to the membersof BruSton who came and supported us! :)

BSUnion's Brunei Student Societies Forum

The Brunei Students Union Forum was held for two days (26th and 27th July 2011) and ended this afternoon at the Yayasan Complex in Brunei in collaboration with the Brunei Students Unit where BruSton attended and met other Brunei societies from the UK, Malaysia and Brunei. Each society had to give a presentation about their respective societies and give an overview of their action plan for the year 2011/2012. It was great opportunity for BruSton to be sharing experiences with the other more veteran Brunei Societies! Thanks to all who came! :)

It is time to vote in the new 2011/2012 BruSton committee.

Date: Wednesday 30th March 2011

Location: Building 29 Room 1101 (Chemistry Building)

For those interested in running for the positions, please provide us with your details to bru.ston@live.com by 27th March 2011, 11.59 pm.

We are looking for a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Sports Officer, Social Officer, Religious Officer and Public Relations Officer.

We encourage current second year students as well as first year students to get involved in the society. If no one runs the society next year, there won't be an official BruSton society recognized by the University anymore. So please take the responsibility and time to become part of the society. Thank You!

Below are theBruSton Committee Responsibilities:

1. President:
• Figurehead of Society to all external interests.
• Responsible for other tasks that do not come under the jurisdiction of other committee members

2. Treasurer:
• Maintain accounts of the Society to be made available for examination at the Annual General Meeting and by the Societies Department Committee
• Funds spent by Society must follow Union regulations and be authorised by the Treasurer and the President

3. Secretary:
• Keep minutes of Society meetings to be made available to Societies Department Committee
• Deal with all communications on behalf of Society and its committee
• Produce and maintain a list of all members, including up to date contact details, to be made available to officers and committee of the Society

4. Religious Officer:
• Organise Friday prayers for Muslim members
• Interact with Islamic Society and other Muslim societies to hold religious events and strengthen ties between Muslims in Southampton
• Recite prayers for meetings and events
• Organise celebrations of Muslim religious holidays

5. Social Officer:
• Organise gatherings, mixers and social events
• Deal with student welfare matters

6. Public Relations Officer:
• Responsible for all marketing of the Society including flyers, Society website and Bunfight
• Handle the ordering of and distribution of Society merchandise which includes hoodies and polo shirts

7. Sports Officer:
• Set up BruSton sports teams for intersociety matches within the University of Southampton and with Bruneian societies from other UK universities
• Organise friendly sports matches between societies and/or between Society members

British High Commission's Digital Scrap Book project

Readers are reminded that the competition to find the best video about the Bruneian experience of UK education, the so-called “Digital Scrap Book”, is on for another month. The competition, organised by the British High Commission, involves making and posting an online video of up to three minutes in length, documenting the UK experience for Bruneian students. It is open to all those in Brunei who are studying or have studied in the UK. The winner will get an iPhone 4 while other prizes include an iPad, an iPod Touch and an iPod nano.

The British High Commissioner, His Excellency Rob Fenn said:“I hear delightful stories about the ups and downs of campus life for Bruneians at British universities. Stories which illustrate how much Bruneian students contribute to British education, and the strategies they use to get the most out of their time in the UK. This competition is my chance to bring those stories together, in a way which will help British universities learn how to cater for Bruneians even better than they do already. Our Digital Scrapbook can be a showcase for the story-telling talents of Bruneians of all ages who have something to share about British education. Though the prizes on offer include the latest high-tech gadgets, it won’t require slick cinematography to win this competition. The winners will be those with the most interesting things to say - from whom British education has most to learn.”

BruSton National Day Event

The committee members have decided to celebrate Brunei's National Day on the 27th of February, it is on a Sunday afternoon 1pm-5pm and will be held in the University main campus (whereabouts tbc).

We will be collecting money to buy food along with the Society funding. We also plan to make quizzes and lucky draws on the day of the event. Any suggestions of what else we could is most welcomed. :)

O Allah! I seek refuge in You from grief and sadness, from weakness and from laziness, from miserliness and from cowardice, from being overcome by debt and from being overpowered by men (other people)

O Allah! I ask You to answer my needs, though my intellect is weak, and my actions are defective, O Allah! I am in need of Your Mercy

O Allah! I am overpowered, so help me.

This was the du'a of sayyidna Nuh (alayhis salam) after 950 years of preaching to a stubborn people.

Glory be to you, we have no knowledge except what you have taught us. Verily, it is You, the All-Knower, the All-Wise

O Allah! Assist me to remember it, and teach me whatever I am ignorant of it

Allahhumma inni astaodeeuka ma qara'tu wama hafaz-tu. Faradduhu 'allaya inda hagati elayhi

O Allah! I entrust You with what I have read and I have studied. (O Allah!) Bring it back to me when I am in need of it.

Blessings of Allah be upon Muhammad and his progeny. O Allah! I ask You, The One who mentions goodness and actualizes it and commands it, Remind me of that which the shaytan makes me forget

رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا إِنَّكَ أَنتَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ

Rabbana ta-qabbal minna 'innaka 'Antas-Sami-'ul-'Aliim

Our Rabb! accept from us. You indeed, You are the all-Hearing, the all-Knowing.
[Surah Baqarah, 2:127]

* Study Tips:

1. Do the prayers at their correct times.

2. Pray a 2 rakat nafl prior to exam

3. Write " بِسْمِه تَعَاَلى " - In the Name of the Most High - (instead of Bismillah...) at the top of the page or cover.

4. Say بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيمِ (In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Kind) - before commencing the exam - indeed before anything that you do.

5. Recite some du'as (like the ones listed above), and keep in constant dhikrullah (i.e. the daily dhikrs when waking, dressing, eating, sleeping, etc)

6. Come home and pray 2 rakat nafl after the exam for shukr (offer thanks to Allah) for granting you the strength and persistence and ability to complete the exam and accomplish goals inshaAllah

7. Increase in your reading and listening of the Qur'an and performing more ibadah (worship) (i.e. nafilah (voluntary) prayers and deeds). Keep away from bad actions and deeds - Follow up a bad deed with a good deed, to cancel it out.

Month of Dhul-Hijjah

Assalamu alaikum warahmahtullah wabarakatuhu (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon you all),

As you may be aware the month of Dhul-Hijjah 1431 starts today Monday 8/11/10 and thus Eid-ul-Adha is expected on the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah (Tuesday 16/11/10) with the day of Arafah on Monday 15 November 2010.

The Prophet (Peace be upon Him) has said: "There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allaah than these ten days..." (Bukhari) so strive hard to perform as many righteous acts during these days.

The Prophet (Peace be upon Him) has also said: "There are no days greater in the sight of Allaah and in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Him than these ten days, so during this time recite Tahleel ("La ilaaha ill-Allaah"), Takbeer ("Allaahu akbar") and Tahmeed ("Alhamdulilah") abunduntly." (Ahmad).

One of the best acts of worship a muslim can do is fast for the sake of Allah which in addition will multiply the reward of his good deeds in that state; "Allaah the almighty says: ‘All the deeds of the son of Adam are for him, except for fasting, which is for Me and I am the One Who will reward him for it." (Bukhari)

These ten days include the day of Arafah on which Allaah perfected His Religion. Fasting on this day will expiate for the sins of two years (those committed in the preceding year and those that will be committed in the following) (An-Nisaa’i, Abu Dawood).

Hence dear respected brothers and sisters, hasten to perform good deeds and fast for the sake of Allah. These days only appear annually and nobody knows if they will see the following day never mind the next year.

The ultimate vision of Charity Week is to become a vehicle to inspire Muslim students to become active, socially engaged and united upon Islam. Raising money to help countless Orphans & Needy Children across the World - a beautiful bonus! All donations will be given to the Islamic Relief charity. Give your full support and give a donation, even if it's just a pound.

Islamic Relief is an international aidand development charity, which aims to alleviate the suffering of the world's poorest people. It is an independent Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) founded in the UK in 1984 by Dr Hany El Banna.

As well as responding to disasters and emergencies, Islamic Relief promotes sustainable economic and social development by working with local communities - regardless of race, religion or gender.

Dengan bersusun sepuluh jari, maaf zahir dan batin dipohonkan. Selamat hari raya aidilfitri diucapkan kepada semua yang menyambut bulan yang mulia ini.

The Last 10 Days of Ramadhan

As we are now approaching the last 10 days of Ramadhan, I thought it would be appropriate to remind us all (Muslims) about the significance of these last days.

Laylat al-Qadr can be found within the last 10 nights of this holy month. The night of Al-Qadr is better than a thousand months. This means it's better than over 83 years! This should encourage the Muslim to spend this night in prayer and to seek the face of Allah. Nabi Muhammad (swt) used to look for this night in hope to gain some good from it. He, the Prophet (pbuh) is the example for the Ummah.

Here's a checklist of things one should do during the last few nights:)

Get in high gear for the next 10 nights and days - Every moment counts. Make the most of the last 10 days, let it be praying, doing good deeds, reading the Quran, all those rewards will be multiplied.
Grab your Quran and recite as often as you can. As is stated in the hadeeth narrated by 'Abd-Allah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'Aas (pbuh), in which Nabi Muhammad (swt) said:"Whoever recites ten aayaat (verses) in qiyaam will ont be recorded as one of the forgetful. Whoever recited a hundred aayat in qiyaam will be recorded as one of the devout, and whoever prays a thousand aayat in qiyaam will be recorded as one of the muqantareen (those who pile up good deeds)" (Reported by Abu Dawood and Ibn Hibbaan. It is a hasan report. Saheeh al-Targheeb, 635).
Forgive thine sins:) If they're holding you back, let them go. You need to keep moving forward after all:)
Say this Du'a during Laylat al-Qadr:
Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibb al-'afwa fa'fu 'anni (Oh Allah, You are All-Forgiving and You love forgiveness so forgive me).
This is one of the best du'as that can be recited. The Prophet (pbuh) taught this to his wife, 'Aishah (pbuh).
Get in class of the Pious People. Allah has described the pious as follows-
"They used to sleep but little by night (invoking their Lord (Allah) and praying, with fear and hope. [Quran: Surah Adh-Dhariyat (17)]

"And in the hours before dawn, they were (found) asking (Allah) for forgiveness" [Quran: Surah Adh-Dhariyat (18)]
and Finally... Ask Allah for all the things that you need. Not that you wouldn't usually do this but heck, now is the best time to do so. Also, don't forget to add your other Muslim brothers and sisters in your du'as. As Nabi Muhammad said:

"The supplication that gets the quickest answer is the one made by a Muslim for another in his absence."

May Allah bless us in these last few days of Ramadhan and let us make the most of it.

Salams every one!

HRD held their annual pre-departure briefing for the new Southampton scholars. A few BruSton committee members attended just to give them familiar faces to remember. The new students had certainly done their research on the university as the speaker, Zoe gave a mini quiz. The enthusiasm by the students was overwhelming (including the senior students present!).

BruSton also had their first sungkai get-together after the HRD event. The dinner was held as an informal event for the new Southampton recruits:) Hopefully we'll get to see more of you in the future! Now that you know our faces, come up to us any time and ask us anything!

InsyAllah, we'll try to do another one before every one sets off to the UK. If not, RAYA IN SOUTHAMPTON :D
